Hercules Barsotti
Hercules Barsotti was a Brazilian painter, graphic designer, scenographer and costume designer, an artist with many talents, and was considered part of the Neo-Concrete movement. Throughout the 1950’s Barsotti embarked upon his works of abstract-geometric designs and it is these works that are of most interest to me. His use of colour and chosen shape of canvas be it lozenge, hexagon, pentagon or circular somehow enhance his strident use of colour which he applies in sharp lines that one way or another, create the illusion of movement from a static canvas. He often uses diagonal bands that taper towards the centre or right to the edge of the canvas leading the viewer back out into the space around the canvas.
I am especially drawn to his use of greens, he seems to balance them so effortlessly and beautifully with blues and purples. Barsotti’s work is a great example of what happens to colours when one purposefully places them close together, which can result in a type of pure balance and harmony or the colours can have the effect of bouncing off each other creating energy, so very inspiring.
