Milton Avery

My father in-law introduced me to Milton Avery many years ago, it was Avery’s use of colour that got me hooked. I was very happy last week even though temperatures were in the 40’s to go to the exhibition of his works at the Royal Academy in London, this travelling exhibition puts together 70 outstanding pieces.

Milton Avery was an American artist known for his, portraits, still lives and landscapes. As he progressed his paintings became more abstract, using flatter shapes that developed into less recognisable objects, which for me turn out to be compositions of singing colour.

I was bowled over by the shear simplicity of the “Reclining Blonde Nude” the contrast of the blacks and whites surprisingly soft and tactile making beautiful wave like shapes that draw you in.

Another favourite “Milton Avery’s Husband and Wife” 1945, feels like a masterclass in colour use, harmony in the background, beautiful dusky pinks and mauves, balanced by the pinkie browns of the jacket moving to darker tones in the trousers, which are edged by a deep emerald green seat that feels so soft and alluring, at the same time his use of two bright accent col ours for their faces orange/red and green/blue just make everything sing!
