TRAVEL
Northern Territory, Australia
My mum and dad met in the Northern Territory, both teaching in Aboriginal communities, and although I’ve never been I have a warm affiliation with Australia’s northern most land. I asked my dad about a few notable memories from his time there.
SEE
East Point, Darwin at Sunset
Mataranka Thermal Springs
Palm Valley - remnants from millions of years ago, when the land was tropical. But 5km’s prior, you can walk 400m into the bush, it’s native bushland valley, a totally different texture to what follows in Palm Valley. If you go around sun down, the valley feels alive when the sun hits it, and the sound of cicada’s fills the air.
EAT
Fresh Barramundi
Mangoes are memorable. Indonesian trade means the fresh fruit & vegetable markets are amazing. Street Food at Darwin Mindil Markets is a to-do.
Goanna! (“We were camping out”)
STAY
We camped 3 or 4 amazing places - notable were Litchfield National Park: an amazing waterfall and pure clean water, you could see right to the bottom of everything. It was before it was a national park so we could camp onsite.
Finke Gorge National Park: we camped on a lookout over the river, you can see the mineral geography - absolutely beautiful.
