Frida Kahlo
There are very few artists that I can pinpoint when I was introduced to them, and immediately effected by their work. Frida Kahlo is one of those artists. My mum - an art teacher, had an ‘Artist Introduction’ A3 Portfolio, consisting of approximately 15 prints. I was completely mesmerised by Kahlo’s self portraits, and the elements she surrounded herself with. I loved learning it wasn’t an imagined sitting, but really the ‘pets’ she had at her Mexican home.
The colour palette in Kahlo’s artworks, and her personal style stuck with me, these are colours I subconsciously and consistently surround myself with. Fast forward to SS/20 ‘Myriad’ Collection; and Frida Kahlo has a place front & centre. From the apologetic colour palette to the Salamanders and Monkeys that reappear throughout the collection. Salamanders sit alongside Monkeys, all in an homage to Frida Kahlo and her ‘Casa Azul’ in Mexico City.
Stevie, is an homage to Kahlo. A collection of motifs that are brought together on a blue base, light to wear for summer evenings and featuring flowers & cactus, vintage woodcut stamps, golden brooches and monkeys, all things I imagine dotted throughout Frida’s house and life.
